What's in a name?
The board spent about 45 minutes June 29 debating a name change.
"It sets up the expectation that we're complaining," said Chairman Ron Riffel. "I see our role as collaborating, shedding light on other topics."
But city staff reminded the committee members that they are not supposed to shed light on other topics, that they have a specific mission: reviewing already-investigated complaints against police officers and deciding whether to believe the investigations' conclusions were proper.
Nevertheless, the members decided to ask the Sarasota City Commission to change the board's name to the Police-Public Cooperation Committee.
